Firestick™ Technology

As long as there have been muzzleloading firearms, their shooters have been burdened by reliability, consistency and safety concerns. Federal Premium® FireStick™ is the critical component of this ignition system that uses an encapsulated propellant charge that loads from the breech, with the bullet loaded from the muzzle. The charge is completely impervious to moisture and loaded with clean-burning Hodgdon® Triple Eight powder to the same tight tolerances as Federal Premium factory ammunition, ensuring shot-to-shot consistency and accuracy muzzleloaders have never experienced. FireStick unloads quickly, simply and safely by slipping out of the action—there’s no need to fire the rifle.

Can the NitroFire® & FireStick system be used during my state’s muzzleloader season?

We’re working hard to help gain acceptance for NitroFire® use during dedicated muzzleloading seasons in more states across the country. This map shows where we currently understand the NitroFire to be legal for muzzleloading season use—it will be updated real-time as we gain more states. This graphic should be used for general guidance only. Always check local regulations and contact your game and fish department to confirm for your area. COVID-19 has caused delays in regulation changes as states respond to the pandemic and the resulting increase in hunting and fishing participation.

Traditions® recommends using their Smackdown® bullet series in the NitroFire® muzzleloader, in particular the Smackdown® Carnivore™, Smackdown® XR™, or Smackdown® Bleed™ models. You will get an excellent gas seal since the Smackdown® series is sized correctly for Traditions™ bore diameter. The Ridgeback™ Sabot that comes with the Carnivore™, XR™, and Bleed™ series is a 4-petal, ribbed sabot which additionally helps provide a tight gas seal. However, the NitroFire® is compatible with any brand of muzzleloader bullets.

Traditions® recommend bullets 325 grain or less. Any bullet larger than 325 grains is not recommended for use. WARNING: Do not load or fire any projectiles that are not approved by Traditions® Firearms due to excessive pressures. Injury and/or death to the shooter or bystanders and damage to property may occur.

While any brand of muzzleloader-specific or 209 type primers could work with the FireStick system, Traditions® recommend the Federal Premium® 209 Muzzleloading Primer.

The ballistics data above provides velocities, energy and trajectories for the bullets listed. Ballistic data provided by Federal Premium. Velocity shot with 26-inch rifled barrel. Height of bullet trajectory in inches above or below line of sight if zeroed at ⊕ yards. Sights 1.5 inches above bore line.

Unloading an unused bullet from the NitroFire® is easy. Be sure the Firestick™ has been removed from your NitroFire® through the breech area. Next, take your ramrod and thread on the NitroFire® Bullet Unloading Jag accessory. Insert the ramrod jag-end first into the breech area of the NitroFire® and push the unused bullet out through the muzzle.

The Federal Premium® Firestick™ is being loaded with Hodgdon® Triple 8 powder. The Hodgdon® Triple 8 powder burns very efficiently and greatly reduces the amount of unburnt powder and residue in the NitroFire®. Due to powder being in the capsule, there is no powder touching and igniting directly inside of the barrel. The bullet seats on the shelf, not on top of powder. All this means the FireStick™ system generally reduces the traditional “powder ring” black powder shooters have come to recognize in the barrel after repeated firings. A powder ring left unclean can lead to barrel corrosion. With the FireStick, there is less or no powder ring to clean, so risk of barrel corrosion is also less.

Hodgdon® Triple 8 is not designed for water-based clean-up. Using a cleaning solvent provides an effective and efficient job cleaning.

No. The NitroFire® does not have an interchangeable barrel option and barrels cannot be purchased to be put on previously existing muzzleloaders.

Yes, the NitroFire® muzzleloader currently requires a 4473 and is not considered an antique firearm.
